A look back at the key moments in Liverpool’s wild draw with Newcastle in Premier League action.

Newcastle 3 - 3 Liverpool

Saudi FC: Isak 35’, Gordon 62’, Schar 90’
The Reds: Jones 50’, Salah 68’ 83’

Pre-Match

Nunez gets the start today after an all-action substitute appearance on the weekend. Of course it was his heroics as a substitute last year that allowed the 10-man Reds to come-from-behind and escape with all 3 points. Hopefully he has just as much from the start this time around. Elsewhere Quansah and Jones come into the starting lineup, and unchanged in the other 8 positions.

First Half

It’s a rough opening 5-6 minutes for Liverpool, especially after Gravenberch was caught out in midfield, leading to a couple of Newcastle breaks. However, the visitors suffered well without giving up anything of note, and managed to get a foothold.

Liverpool get their first real chance of the night about 15 minutes in, and a pair of superb efforts from Mac Allister leaves Nick Pope at full stretch for one, and the other hit the outside of the post. Truly unlucky!

Macca picks up an extremely soft yellow and will now miss out against Everton. So, that’s great.

Newcastle have another little flurry, including an effort of their own that grazes the far post. Liverpool have not done well to quiet St. James’ Park so far.

The home side open the scoring, and it’s a cracking goal to be fair. Isak picked it up about 30 yards out, took a touch and leathered it. Not much you can do about those. A moment later Gordon could have (and should have) doubled their lead, but his 1-v-1 shot was directly at Kelleher.

The ref blows. But also it’s halftime. Last year at the half we were down 1-0 AND down to 10 men. So. Progress?

Second Half

Liverpool open the half with an equalizer! And it’s a hell of an effort. Mac Allister floats a ball over the top for Salah to run onto. He drives to the byline and cuts it back for Curtis Jones, who slots with a fantastic first time effort. A moment later Gakpo has a great effort that is deflected just wide, and then a moment after that Darwin nearly gets on the end of a super dangerous ball across the face of goal. Nice of the lads to show up for the second half!

Newcastle take the lead again, and both Gomez and Kelleher will be disappointed with their efforts on that relatively straight forward run and attack.

Slot brings on Diaz, Szoboszlai, and Alexander-Arnold for Gakpo, Gravenberch, and Gomez. And! It pays nearly instant dividends! Trent picks up a ball, drives to the byline, and picks out Salah, who slots for a second equalizer.

MO SALAH! MO SALAH! RUNNING DOWN THE WING! Or rather gathering it near the penalty spot, taking a touch and putting it in the far corner. THE EGYPTIAN KING!

Aaaand Newcastle equalize from a free kick. It looked like Kelleher was going to collect it, but let it run and the hosts capitalize.

Final Thoughts

Well, it was one of those. The second half was better from the Reds, and a draw was probably deserved on the balance of play. Move on to the next one.
