Star midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai isn’t taking anything for granted in the Premier League title race despite Liverpool’s 13 point lead.
After a week that has seen them dispatch first Manchester City and then Newcastle United by 2-0 in games where the result never really felt in doubt, Liverpool are sat 13 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.
The chasing Gunners have a game in hand, but even presuming they were to win it the gap would be ten points with ten games to play. Liverpool are very much title favourites. They just need to keep their focus—and keep their focus on themselves.
“After mathematically they have no chance to get us,” was midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai’s answer to when he and his teammates would feel confident in their advantage over Arsenal in the Premier League title race after Wednesday’s win.
“We are really happy to be 13 points clear, but we will focus on ourselves. Now we have the Champions League coming up, so we will have to focus on this as well. Then game by game we are looking forward to staying at the top.”
While it’s some of Liverpool’s more veteran core who have experience winning the Premier League title while players like Szoboszlai arrived later, this entire group does have first-hand experience of fighting for trophies after last season.
Then, the Reds were in the mix through February before falling away. They also won the League Cup and were for a time considered one of the favourites in the Champions League. That they came up short is both experience and fuel.
“When I came to Liverpool I wanted to win everything my first season,” Szoboszlai added. “So I don’t like to talk about it. We just have to focus as I said game by game. Champions League, Premier League in between, then a cup final.”
