For many athletes, playing for one’s nation carries with it an additional bit of cache. It is a limited, invite-only team that, if successful, only burnishes one’s cv. Legacy is a thing that many elite athletes chase and having a successful club and national career really cements that reputation for many. On the club side, having many senior internationals is par for the course in terms of clubs at the elite level of global football, which includes Liverpool.

For Olivia Smith, Canada’s youngest ever player to make a full debut for the senior team, it’s all part and parcel in the life of a young superstar. And while international duty isn’t new, I’m sure it still carries significant import.

Yesterday, Smith participated in Canada’s match against Mexico in the Pinatar Cup. If you, like myself, aren’t familiar with the Pinatar Cup, it’s a four year-old competition held annually in Spain and organized by a private, Slovakian company.

Smith and Canada were able to comfortably see Mexico off, 2-nil in the competition. Canada will next take on Chinese Taipei on Tuesday, wrapping up their international break.

Here’s hoping that Smith gets Canada across the line and returns to Merseyside healthy.
