The midfielder was taken off after scoring for Argentina against Chile earlier this week.

News of Alexis Mac Allister’s lay off may have been premature.

The midfielder did come off as a precaution in the World Cup 2026 qualifying match between Argentina and Chile after he scored the opening goal in what ended up being a 3-0 rout. Mac Allister had already been previously left out of training for head coach Lionel Scaloni’s squad as a “potential injury concern” before the match, but still made it to the starting XI before being subbed off in the 78th minute with some clear discomfort.

On Sunday Scaloni revealed, thankfully, that Mac Allister had overcome whatever that discomfort was and returned to Argentina’s training regime ahead of their next match on Tuesday against Colombia. An injury was never officially confirmed, and now it appears that any worries were premature.

“The team is fine, recovering from the game the other day, with some typical ailments. Nico (Gonzalez) trained separately and Alexis (Mac Allister) with the rest of the group,” Scaloni told the press.

“We will see how they have evolved over the last two days to decide how we are going to play.”

This is not to say that any worries were misplaced, as Liverpool fans have plenty of history with watching our players get injured on international duty. The Reds face Nottingham Forest on Saturday, September 14 so to lose one of the most important members of our midfield ahead of that match would certainly be disheartening.

Thankfully, it appears that’s not the case and we may still be able to rely on him.
