Liverpool stumbled to a draw in their opening game of the 2022-23 Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds twice had to come from behind away at newly-promoted Fulham.

The hosts opened the scoring on 32 minutes, Aleksandar Mitrovic rising highest to head Kenny Tete’s cross home.

Darwin Nunez then equalised in the 64th minute via a fortunate ricochet involving Tosin Adarabioyo.

However, Mitrovic put Fulham ahead just eight minutes later from the penalty spot.

In the end, Liverpool salvaged a point with 10 minutes to go, courtesy of a scrappy Mohamed Salah equaliser.

Many Reds players were below-par on the day, with Alexander-Arnold copping some criticism for his role in Fulham’s opener.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defending on the goal is atrocious,” pundit Kris Boyd said on Sky Sports News (1:12pm, 6/8/22).

“He doesn’t even know that Mitrovic is behind him and he just comes and bullies him.”

Alexander-Arnold gave the ball away too often in the first half, and then was outmuscled by the Fulham striker for the opener.

However, he did help Liverpool salvage a draw with his searching pass, which Salah eventually bundled home.

In terms of positives, the Reds did get better as the game went on, and they did manage to at least claw a point.

It’s a long season and Liverpool can – and will – play much better once they properly get into gear.

Up next for the Reds is Crystal Palace at Anfield on Monday 15 August.
